Ojas: The glow that shines through our eyes

Ojas is a synonym for immunity in Ayurveda.

Ojas is that which gives us a glow in our eyes. It is the radiance and vitality expressed through our energy field. It is that which helps us stay balanced and see the beauty in life. It is a shield that protects us from any negativity and helps us to sustain life.

Ojas is always within us, but we have to optimize it through our lifestyle, nutrition, and relationship choices.

When Ojas is depleted we experience…

  • Fatigue

  • Sadness and negativity

  • Weakness

  • Emotional distress

  • Loneliness

  • Recurrent colds and flues

  • Dry skin

  • Cold hands and feet

  • Low sexual drive

  • Impotence

How can we enhance Ojas?

Ayurveda is the ancient holistic science of self-healing that teaches us to have harmonious relationships with everything that surrounds us.

"Life is relationships, and to be is to be in relationships." - Dr. Vasant Lad

Ojas is enhanced through conscious choices in relationships. How we relate to others, to our food, and the environment will have a direct impact on Ojas.

Ayurveda teaches us that food should be eaten in a way that will not aggravate our Agni, our digestive fire. It should be in its most natural form, and its primary purpose is of nourishment of the body, mind, and soul. Ayurveda also teaches us that our daily cycles should be aligned with nature. Sleeping at the appropriate time, waking up before sunrise, eating at the right times will enhance our Ojas and our immunity.

All these soulful practices will bring more love and light into our life.

But the essential ingredient to optimize Ojas is our mindset and our emotional state.

Even if we live a life connected to the cycles of nature and eating organic, healthy, and local foods, but we are experiencing deep grief within our hearts, sadness, resentment, or anger. It will profoundly deplete Ojas.

It is essential to be able to shift our minds and perspective from negativity into love and compassion.

Life has many challenges and can bring lots of suffering into our hearts. But suffering is just a window for transformation and love.

May we all realize who we truly are and become that light of unconditional love.
